Addie Jane Lewis Odom

Addie Jane Lewis Odom, the oldest child of John Wesley Lewis and Jessie Gatlin Lewis, was well known for her hard work and quick wit. Born in 1893, she firmly believed that "idle hands were the devil's workshop," and lived her life determined to "wear out, not rust out." She was active in the community and church, hosting quilting meetings and teaching Sunday School classes at Mount Hope Baptist Church. She also worked alongside her husband, A.T. tending their fields and their general store. Addie also served as the Corresponding Secretary of the Shankleville Homecoming and as the Shankleville Community reporter for the Newton County News.
