Matthew Honer Clay, Sr.

Quiet and dependable, Matthew Honer Clay became an official part of the Shankleville Community on June 25, 1950 when he married Larutha Odom, daughter of A.T. and Addie Odom at Mount Hope Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II, and attended Prairie View A&M where he excelled in his studies and as a world-class football and track star. (Matthew was inducted into Prairie View's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.) He and Larutha lived in Beaumont for more than 45 years, where he taught his students Mathematics and Industrial Arts, and his student athletes the fundamentals of football, basketball and track.
